This photo is of The Roofless Church, a world famous church in New Harmony, IN. The dome here is part of a beautiful walled 8 acre open space and Jane Blaffer Owen got press in the NYT for her amazing dream come true. Notice anything strange in this photo? And who's that young guy? Photo Credit: James K. Mellow, St. Louis MO

2025 Chess Lessons

Object of game – unique game where element of chance is almost eliminated.

The pieces: names, moves, power, flaws, captures, which pieces are most valuable.

Board placement.

Lovely way sides are determined. Chance!

Never touch a piece unless you move THAT piece. If you touch a piece and then stop the touch, you still MUST move that piece.

The fun, the challenge to pawn a Queen! WOW!!!

It can get challenging if you tend to move quickly and your chess partner moves slowly. Yes, there’s a whole world of speed chess. Not my thing. Good luck.

Anger? Joy? Understandable. It hurts to lose a good game, sometimes a LOT. I’ve been there. And yep, it’s thrilling to win!

Check!

Ways a game ends:

Checkmate ~ king under attack, trapped, cannot escape and no teammate to intercede.

Resign ~ one side quits, sometimes a hand is offered by player quitting, to seal the win.

Draw ~ note: two variations: with both, neither side wins or loses; one type “draw” only if both agree to quit. Sometimes this is offered by “superior” player who just wants the game to be over, isn’t willing to give more time to play to checkmate. It happens. Other player does NOT have to agree.

Stalemate ~ a type of “draw” - - rare end-game situation, but it can happen: player who’s turn it is to move is not in check and has no legal move. Impasse, game over. !!!

Final exam: Fischer/Spassky #3

Exposure to algebraic chess notation, I’m still learning

En passant: your pawn has advanced to 5th row, opponent advances a pawn two squares while passing square on which your pawn could have captured other pawn ~ next move, you have the option of capturing other pawn just the same as if it had only advanced one square and now your pawn can take square of diagonal as if it had captured. Other pawn is captured and removed. Often a dumb choice…
