This photo is of The Roofless Church, a world famous church in New Harmony, IN. The dome here is part of a beautiful walled 8 acre open space and Jane Blaffer Owen got press in the NYT for her amazing dream come true. Notice anything strange in this photo? And who's that young guy? Photo Credit: James K. Mellow, St. Louis MO

Lewis Chess set

Lewis Chess Set

251117

Anyone for chess? Let’s use my new Lewis set. Yes, a replica, some hard plastic stuff, very fun to study and imagine life in the 12th century. No plastic then, but lots of walrus tusks and sperm whale teeth, and yep, cool artists!

Very cool details, even the weird Knight horse is fun with details. Can a horse have tall legs in front and short legs behind???

Those Queens! They ain’t happy gals, maybe they gonna lose and know it? Looks like they want a draw!

The pawns! Well, we call ‘em pawns, this set looks like little tombstones. Really. Hmm, maybe a way to save time when the front row little dudes get killed?

Keep in mind - - the pieces were found along the coast of Scotland in 1830’s, jumbled in with other pieces from other games, not a complete chess set. So what I have, these cool replicas, well, some pieces are new art, yet all look coordinated and interesting - - well, not the little tombstone pawns…

Facial hair! LOL! Check the Kings, not same hair, yet very well-groomed, those dudes had servants that kept them looking important. And no, the White King is not holding an umbrella! What’s the chance of that? Was his umbrella his serious weapon? Does he pray for rain?

Hair, hmm, guess the Queens ain’t showing it. Scarf thing for both, fancy crown shows no hair, and whew, Black Queen is stressed! Hand to her face, shocked look on her face, she’s got troubles. And what’s with the horn in her hand? Hmm, apparently that part of Scotland was, in the 12century, mostly Norway. Vikings? Is that a Viking horn she holds?

Almost funny is what we call the Rook. Modern chess is often sporting an elephant (Renaissance art) as Rook, not this set. The Lewis Rooks are short dudes with a BIG shield and sword.

You want to play? Let’s!

Comment and I’ll give you my best game, yeah, Algebraic Chess Notation, and this game, my first win in 13 moves. Shocking, yeah, I play against me, two cowards face each other! LOL, at first I thought it was “check” and then  ~  ~  WOW! This is MATE # !
