Learn to Play Chess 6 hours/$60
What to Expect
● 6 hours of learning and
practice
○ This time can be all at
once or broken up into 2-hour sessions convenient to the student/s. Pizza may
be included.
○ We will view Queen of
Katwe, a film based on a true story, of a little girl who learned and became a
chess champion when she was 14 yrs old. We will consider the emotional state of
the game portrayed in the film and bonus material. The film is very important!
If you don’t want to watch the film together, then I don’t want to teach you
chess.
○ Final exam – play a
Fischer/Spassky game.
● After six hours, you’ll
be able to play a game, and if it appeals to you, you’ll have a lifetime of
chess ahead.
What You Need
● $60 per student
○ Bring 1 friend or 2. 2-3
students are best for learning together, a better chance to use what you learn.
Just you? That’s ok.
● A travel chess set—you’ll
need it!
● Your health.
○ I require that all
attending are healthy ~ no coughing on my chess pieces! We can always
re-schedule.
Why Chess?
Chess is a fascinating sport (yes, it’s a sport!) You’ll be
an athlete!
Why, you ask, would chess matter to your life? For me, chess
is a wonderful way to put aside the realities of life, and spend an hour or
two, with a friend, or by myself, to diverge from daily pressures and have full
attention for this wonderful game. Yes, I play both sides, laugh a lot, and
enjoy every minute.
No, I don’t teach tournament chess. I don’t work with a
chess clock. However, there are important courtesies for chess players, yes,
even between friends, that matter.
